I was made a Laurel in January 2022 by King Bela and Queen Nerissa. I was recognized as a Laurel during the plague times and three of us were elevated on the same day.
I started in the SCA in the shire of Falcon's Keep in the Principality of Northshield in 1999. There I earned my AoA. I mostly studied and taught dance at that time and taught at several Northshield Dance Seminars. I was also the chronicler of my college group and we tried everything from sewing, to paper making, to candle making, to armor making.
While in Northshield, I spent two summers living and working in Calontir. It was fascinating to learn how another kingdom worked. I also met the man who would become my husband.
I lived a short time in the Barony of Nordskogen before returning to Falcon's Keep and then leaving Northshield just before it became a kingdom and moved to the Barony of Sternfeld in the Middle Kingdom. There I did some of my favorite things like serve feasts and work gate table. I took on the position of chatelaine for a short time before moving out of kingdom.
We moved to the Barony of Three Rivers in Calontir and were happy to be welcomed as old friends. This was the time I fell in love with illumination and became the apprentice of Countess Lyriel de la Foret and the protege of Master Modar Neznanich. I learned stained glass from my friend Luckie and we helped with the first Metal and Glass Symposium in Calontir. I got my first taste of a period material when I was able to do the illumination for a court barony scroll on vellum.
We moved to the Barony of Caerthe in the Outlands in 2010. I was encouraged to continue my work in illumination by Master Avram. I learned to apply gold leaf and then to make paint using purchased pigments. Making paint was so fun and easy that I wanted to learn how to make my own pigments. I learned from period texts and from the notes others had created of their experiments. I started researching, teaching, and learning so much more about pigments, paints, and other period art materials such as charcoal, prepared papers for silverpoint, and lead point. I dabble in ink making, calligraphy, and book binding.
I love to help people get excited about anything in the book arts and am always willing to help or teach. You can find my research at https://dragonflyscribeblog.wordpress.com/.
